This session will teach attendees about the progress Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made in expanding access to justice throughout the world, but also how laws have been implemented to stymie that progress. For example, in France, Article 33 makes it punishable by up to 5 years in prison to conduct analytics of judicial decisions. California Business & Professions code 17940 requires companies to disclose use of bots, and in Tennessee, a State Senate bill seeks to define online legal services as the unlawful practice of law if certain requirements are not met. The session will include additional examples and explore whether regulation of AI in the law will help or hurt its adoption and what legal and ethical issues attendees should watch out for in using AI in their own legal practices.
