Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already transforming many service professions and law is no different. While AI-related techniques and tools continue to improve at a rapid pace and become more accessible, the challenge remains to ensure that AI is used responsibly and ethically within the legal sphere. In this session we will present a framework for evaluating where and how AI should be implemented within the justice system. We will go beyond the current hype to look at what AI can do today, what it cannot, and when it makes sense to use it. AI is very powerful technology -- too powerful to leave it to only to the technologists. The legal services community needs to engage and embrace this new technology and take a lead role in implementing it in ways that improving access to justice. We also need to be prepared to help court and government agency leaders spot the ethical issues involved in AI-enhanced justice processes and resolve them fairly and justly.
